2020 Summer Olympics opening kicks off in Tokyo
The opening ceremony of the Games of the XXXII Olympiad began on Friday at Olympic Stadium in Tokyo.
The 2020 Summer Olympics, rescheduled to 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic, are expected to be officially opened by His Imperial Majesty Emperor Naruhito of Japan. In accordance with the rules imposed to curb the spread of COVID-19, the ceremony is being held with no live audience, except for competing athletes and a selected number of dignitaries.
A total of 11,326 sportsmen from 205 Olympic nations and the Refugee Olympic Team (EOR) will compete in 339 events in 33 sports.
