7.1-magnitude earthquake hits close to Fukushima
A 7.1 earthquake hit 75 kilometers away from Namie in Japan’s Fukushima region, the Japan Meteorological Agency announced on Saturday. Initial information from the agency said the earthquake did not cause any damage but that there may be slight sea-level changes in coastal regions.
The earthquake was registered at a depth of 60 kilometers and its epicenter was in the ocean. Nevertheless, residents in the area were asked to move to higher grounds as a precaution. However, local authorities didn’t issue a tsunami warning.
Namie was evacuated following the March 2011 Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster which was caused by an earthquake and tsunami. The severity of the 2011 nuclear incident is only comparable to the 1986 Chernobyl disaster.
