Germany, France, Italy hint sanctions over Libya
German Chancellor Angela Merkel, French President Emmanuel Macron and Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte threatened on Saturday to impose sactions on countries that continue to sell firearms in Libya and therefore violate the United Nations’ embargo.
“We are ready to consider the possible use of sanctions if the breaches of the embargo at sea, on land or in the air continue, and look forward to the proposals that the High Representative of the European Union for foreign affairs and security policy will make in this regard,” their joint statement read.
Merkel recently met with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and discussed with him the process of ending the civil war in Libya.
