Japan ruling party confirms Abe resignation
Japan’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party confirmed on Friday Prime Minister Shinzo Abe will resign due to his deteriorating health.
According to comments made by senior party official Hiroshige Seko, Abe informed the LDP of his intention to step down. However, Abe will remain prime minister until the party holds a leadership election.
Abe, who is serving his fourth term as the country’s prime minister, previously resigned in 2007 amid growing unpopularity and poor health. His current term was set to expire in September of 2021.
