Von der Leyen names Dombrovskis new EU trade chief
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced on Tuesday that Latvian politician Valdis Dombrovskis was named European Commissioner for Trade on a permanent basis after he served as the EU’s acting trade chief since August 26. He will remain the Commission’s representative for the Eurogroup as well, she noted.
Von der Leyen also unveiled that First Vice President of the European Parliament Mairead McGuinness will be Ireland’s new European Commissioner, taking charge of Financial Services, Financial Stability and Capital Markets portfolio. According to the Commission’s president, McGuinness has “significant political experience on EU issues” that will contribute to “carrying forward the EU’s Financial Sector policy agenda, and ensuring it supports and strengthens the Commission’s key priority, notably the twin green and digital transition.”
Former Vice President of the European Investment Bank (EIB) Andrew McDowell was taken into consideration for the role as well.
