Asia trades mostly higher with data, COVID vaccine in focus
Equities on major stock markets in the Asia-Pacific region were mostly higher on Tuesday with all eyes on COVID-19 vaccine development and data reports coming from Japan. Investors’ hopes over containing the pandemic rose after the first batch of Russia’s Sputnik V vaccine against COVID-19 entered free circulation.
On the data front, Japan’s economy marked the largest contraction in the second quarter, falling 28.1% annually, while the country’s Customs Office said Japan recorded the first trade deficit in four months, topping analysts’ estimates.
The Nikkei 225 ticked 0.63% higher at 7:39 am CET, while the Kospi gained 0.72% and the Hang Seng added 0.13% at the same time. The Shenzhen Composite lost 0.20%, while the Shanghai Composite and the S&P/ASX 200 advanced 0.34% and 0.61% concurrently. The dollar traded flat against the yen, changing hands for 106.2515 at 7:32 am CET.
