Congressman quits GOP over Trump’s efforts to overturn election
Republican Congressman of Michigan, Paul Mitchell, has asked the Clerk of the United States House of Representatives to change his party identification from Republican to independent over President Donald Trump’s refusal to concede election loss.
He said he believes it is well within the right of any candidate to demand the ballots be recounted if fraud concerns have a legal basis. “But we have gone through the process,” he explained, condemning the head of state for still alleging voter fraud.
“This party has to stand up for democracy first, for our Constitution first,” Mitchell told CNN after announcing his departure from the party in a letter sent to Republican National Committee (RNC) chair Ronna McDonald.
