UK, EU reaffirm ‘full commitment’ to NI Protocol
European Commission Vice-President for Interinstitutional Relations Maros Sefcovic and British Cabinet Office Minister Michael Gove issued on Wednesday a joint statement in which they reiterated their “full commitment” to the Good Friday Agreement and the “proper implementation” of the Northern Ireland Protocol from the Brexit Withdrawal Agreement.
The statement stressed both sides condemned “unreservedly any threats or intimidation, noting that the safety and welfare of the people of Northern Ireland and that of our staff would always be the utmost priority” and agreed to “work intensively to find solutions to outstanding issues.”
Earlier this week, Gove accused the EU of trying to “unilaterally suspend the Northern Ireland Protocol” by restricting exports of vaccines against COVID-19 to the region.
