Senate votes in favor of witnesses at Trump trial
The United States Senate voted on Saturday in favor of calling witnesses to the impeachment trial of former President Donald Trump. A total of 55 senators voted in favor while 45 were against calling witnesses.
Earlier, Trump said he doesn’t want to testify as he considers the proceedings “unconstitutional.” However, lead impeachment manager Jamie Raskin said Trump needed to testify and even wrote in a letter sent to the former president, “If you decline this invitation, we reserve any and all rights, including the right to establish at trial that your refusal to testify supports a strong adverse inference regarding your actions (and inaction) on January 6, 2021.”
After calling witnesses, both sides will have closing arguments. The trial is expected to end next week.
