UK CMA says it plans Big Tech antitrust probes
United Kingdom Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) Chief Executive Andrea Coscelli revealed on Monday that the agency will launch antitrust investigations into business practices of multiple tech giants from the United States “during the course of this year.”
The antitrust watchdog will look to expand on similar probes conducted by the European Commission and will cooperate with its counterparts in Brussels on the same matter, Coscelli told the Financial Times.
The UK government announced last year it would establish “a dedicated” Digital Markets Unit, which will operate as part of the agency, in 2021. Its role will be “to introduce and enforce a new code to govern the behaviour of platforms that currently dominate the market, such as Google and Facebook.”
