EU to sanction Chinese officials over human rights abuses – report

The European Union is set to impose sanctions on four Chinese officials and one entity over alleged human rights violations against Muslim minorities in Xinjiang, the Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday citing several diplomats.

According to the report, the new measures are yet to receive formal approval, which is likely to happen when EU foreign ministers meet later this month. The bloc is also planning to target officials from Russia, North Korea and Africa over human rights abuses.

Sources noted the identities of those targeted will be revealed once the decision on the sanctions list is formally reached. Unlike the United States, which has targeted numerous Chinese officials and companies over the treatment of Uyghurs in Xinjiang, the EU has not imposed any sanctions against Beijing since 1989.
