Iran prepares to launch redesigned Arak nuclear reactor
Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization revealed on Friday the country is set to cold test its redesigned Arak nuclear reactor soon before fully commissioning it somewhere in 2021.
“In other words, we have advanced work in the field of fuel, storage, etc,” commented the organization’s spokesman Behrouz Kamalvandi, according to local media. The reactor was shut down in 2015 under the commitments of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, the nuclear deal between Iran and the West.
However, it was allowed at the time to switch to producing heavy water. Now, the reactor is planned to also produce isotopes for medical and agricultural use, the Atomic Energy Organization said.
