WH: Iran enriching uranium to 60% is ‘provocative’
White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki stated on Tuesday that Iran’s announcement that they will start enriching uranium to 60% tomorrow is “provocative” and could undermine the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) talks in Vienna.
Psaki said that the White House is “concerned with this provocative announcement,” and that the rest of the P5+1 countries should denounce Iran’s actions. She added that this also puts in question Iran’s seriousness in rejoining the JCPOA. However, Psaki also confirmed that the indirect talks with Iran are expected to continue in Vienna and that the “diplomatic path is the only path forward” when it comes to Iran’s nuclear capabilities.
Iran announced earlier today that they intend to start enriching uranium up to 60%, despite setbacks after the Natanz nuclear facility incident. JCPOA talks are meant to resume later in the week in Vienna, as US officials reaffirmed the country’s commitment to ensuring Iran doesn’t get nuclear arms.
