UK retail sales up by 0.5% in June

The quantity of goods bought in retail sales in the United Kingdom went up by 0.5% in June in comparison to the month before, significantly exceeding analysts’ expectations, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) revealed in its report published on Friday. On an annual level, the figure went up by 9.7%.

In comparison to February 2020, before the outbreak of COVID-19 in the country, the volume increased by 9.5%. The largest contribution came from food stores, which observed a monthly rise in sales of 4.2%.

On the other hand, the online sector declined to 26.7% as consumers returned to physical stores following the gradual easing of the restrictions imposed to tackle the spread of COVID-19.
