Johnson convenes emergency Afghanistan meeting
United Kingdom Prime Minister held an emergency COBRA (Cabinet Office Briefing Rooms) meeting on Friday on the issue of escalating Taliban takeover, vowing not to turn “our backs on Afghanistan.” The first item on the ministerial agenda was the agreement to call for an emergency session of the United Nations Security Council.
Johnson has received criticism from members of the Parliament for the handling of the situation. “What would Churchill say? This is NOT our finest hour,” Tobias Ellwood, chairman of the defence committee, wrote on Twitter.
The UK has already deployed additional 600 troops to Kabul in the last 24 hours in order to evacuate British nationals from the area as the Taliban forces seized Logar province 60 kilometres away from the nation’s capital.
