EU refuses to end court control over trade in NI
The European Commission stated on Monday it will not remove the European Court of Justice (ECJ) from overseeing trade on the Irish island as that would “effectively mean cutting Northern Ireland off from the European Union’s single market and related opportunities.”
“Our focus should be on those issues that matter the most to the people of Northern Ireland and not on requests such as removing the role of the ECJ,” the commission’s spokesperson said at a press conference.
Earlier in the day, Irish Foreign Minister Simon Coveney dismissed the United Kingdom for refusing all of the bloc’s proposals to solve the issues concerning the Northern Ireland Protocol “before they are released.”
