UK: Omicron cases continue to grow ‘rapidly’
The United Kingdom Health Security Agency (UKHSA) reported on Sunday that daily cases of the Omicron coronavirus variant continued to grow “rapidly in the country.”
The agency noted that studies showed that the variant is more transmissive than the Delta variant, adding that current projections put it becoming the dominant strain in the country by mid-December to account for more than 50% of new daily cases.
On the topic of vaccines, the UKHSA said that the AstraZeneca and Pfizer-BioNTech vaccines provide “much lower levels of protection” against symptomatic cases and that after the booster shot the effectiveness of the vaccines stands at around 70% to 75%.
