Iran asks for US ‘political statement’ on nuclear deal
Iran’s Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian (pictured) suggested on Wednesday that the US Congress should make a “political statement” about its commitment to the nuclear agreement with Tehran so that neither side can walk away from the deal, as the United States did in 2018.
“As a matter of principle, public opinion in Iran cannot accept as a guarantee the words of a head of state, let alone the United States, due to the withdrawal of Americans from the JCPOA,” Abdollahian told the Financial Times, adding that “at least their parliaments or parliament speakers, including the US Congress, can declare in the form of a political statement their commitment to the agreement and return to the JCPOA implementation.”
At the same time, the minister expressed his frustration with Washington’s position after weeks of talks in Vienna that appear to be in danger of stalling. Recently, however, European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell stated that the two sides could soon reach an agreement.
