Telegram could restrict channels if Ukraine crisis worsens
Telegram Messenger LLP CEO Pavel Durov said on Sunday the social network could restrict some channels in Russia and Ukraine if the Ukraine crisis worsens. YouTube has already taken similar measures, halting monetization for some state-owned Russian media channels.
“If the situation escalates we will consider partially or fully restricting the work of Telegram channels in involved countries during conflict,” Durov stated. He added some channels on the network “are increasingly becoming a source of unverified information.”
Durov later noted that Telegram decided not to consider such measures after many users contacted it asking them not to take such actions as the platform is the “only source of information” for them. “However, once again I ask you to double-check and not take on faith the data that is published in Telegram channels during this difficult period,” he added.
