Habeck: Germany to cut Russian oil by the end of 2022
German Economy Minister Robert Habeck stated on Saturday that Germany aims to be almost free of Russian oil by the end of 2022.
“With each day, indeed each hour, we are saying goodbye to Russian imports,” Habeck told Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, adding that if Germany reaches that point, it “will be independent of Russian coal by the autumn and nearly independent of Russian oil by the end of the year.”
He added that Germany should abandon Russian energy imports altogether, switching energy supply to renewables. However, he recognized “sanctions must be designed in such a way that we can hold out” due to the “deep cuts, economically and socially.”
