UK to set aside NI Protocol issues – report
British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss will postpone a decision on triggering Article 16 of the Northern Ireland Protocol because of the Ukraine-Russia conflict, the Telegraph reported on Saturday. According to a source, she has proposed tax breaks between Northern Ireland and the rest of the United Kingdom to strengthen trade, as well as a way for goods to enter Northern Ireland “with minimal paperwork.”
“The EU aren’t showing enough pragmatism, so she’s exploring unilateral measures to ease the pressures on the ground,” a person close to Truss said, adding that “Article 16 remains very much on the table” and that she is “100% prepared to use it.” Article 16 can be triggered unilaterally and would suspend the trade agreement between the European Union and the UK.
