Belgium postpones eliminating nuclear energy use – PM

Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo asserted at a press conference that the country will be postponing its plans to eliminate the use of nuclear energy by 2025, due to the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

“The federal government has decided to take the necessary steps to extend the life of the two newest nuclear reactors by ten years. This should strengthen the independence of fossil fuels in turbulent geopolitical times,” De Croo stated.

The prime minister added that the process of transitioning to renewable energy sources will be accelerated by “additional investments in offshore wind energy, hydrogen, solar energy, and sustainable mobility.”

Since the beginning of Russia’s military operation in Ukraine, the prices of fossil fuels have been volatile, while the world showed concerns over energy supply due to the growing list of sanctions against Russia.
