Trump admin in talks with chipmakers on building factories in US – report
The administration of United States President Donald Trump is in talks with chipmakers, including Intel and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC), to build factories in the country in order to cut dependence on Asian plants, the Wall Street Journal reported on Sunday citing sources close to the matter.
Intel’s vice president of policy and technical affairs, Greg Slater, noted the company is “very serious” about the plans, while TSMC noted it is considering opening plants in several locations, including the US, but stressed “there is no concrete plan yet.”
Recently, Trump called for more manufacturing to be brought to the US, caliming the coronavirus outbreak showed the importance of keeping “vital supply chains” in the country.
