Trump: Funding halt may be permanent if WHO doesn’t improve
United States President Donald Trump said on Tuesday his administration will consider making the funding halt to the World Health Organization (WHO) permanent if “substantial improvements” are not made within the next 30 days.
In a letter sent to WHO Director Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Trump said a review into the agency confirmed “many serious concerns” raised last month.
“The only way forward for the World Health Organization is if it can actually demonstrate independence from China […] But action is needed quickly. We do not have time to waste.” the US president noted, adding, on top of potentially making the funding freeze permanent, he will also reconsider the US membership as he says: “I cannot allow American taxpayer dollars to continue to finance an organization, that, in its present state, is also not serving America’s interests.”
Previously, the US president stopped the funding to the WHO until an investigation about the health organization’s response to the COVID-19 outbreak shows results.
