Airbus asks UK gov’t to aid Virgin Atlantic – report

Airbus SE General Counsel John Harrison asked UK Secretary of State for Transport Grant Shapps for Downing Street to financially support Virgin Atlantic amid coronavirus’s impact on aviation and airline industry, Sky News reported on Wednesday, citing letters it obtained.

The airline’s “collapse could have an extremely negative impact on the A330 programme. As you will be aware, all wings for these aircraft are designed and manufactured in the UK, and orders from airlines like Virgin are vital for the continuation of our business,” Harrison reportedly wrote in a letter to Shapps. Sir Richard Branson’s Virgin Group reportedly provided $100 million assistance to Virgin Atlantic after it had asked employees to take unpaid leaves of eight weeks and grounded 85% of its fleet.

Besides Airbus, Rolls-Royce Holdings plc and Heathrow Airport similarly warned of negative consequences the Virgin Atlantic’s potential breakdown may bring to the entire aviation and airline industry, the report claimed.
