Altmaier sees no link between Navalny’s case, Nord Stream 2

German Economy Minister Peter Altmaier stated on Sunday that alleged human rights violation related to the detention of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny is not linked with the construction of Nord Stream 2 as “the decision to build the pipeline was made many years ago.”

“If Nord Stream 2 is not completed, then Russia will not automatically sell less gas, since Nord Stream 1 and the gas pipeline through Ukraine are still in operation, but German companies will lose huge investments,” Almaier told Bild am Sonntag.

On Friday, Russia expelled German, Polish and Swedish diplomats over accusations about their role in protests across the country that emerged following Navalny’s jailing. German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas noted Berlin is ready to respond to the move made by Moscow, but Chancellor Angela Merkel stressed Germany is not considering imposing sanctions against the pipeline construction over the Russian opposition figure’s detention.
