ASEAN countries urge Myanmar to end violence
Indonesian President Joko Widodo (pictured) stated on Saturday that the Association of Southeast Asian Nations’ (ASEAN) countries demanded from Myanmar to stop the violence that has gripped the country since the military coup.
During the summit of the countries, Widodo said that “the situation in Myanmar is unacceptable and should not continue,” adding that “violence must be stopped” and “democracy, stability and peace” returned in the country. Moreover, the association also called for the “release of political detainees promptly and unconditionally,” and access to be granted to the ASEAN chair and secretary-general into Myanmar to assess the situation first-hand.
Myanmar State Administration Council Chairman Min Aung Hlaing attended the summit, his first visit outside Myanmar following the coup, as the country faces further sanctions from the United States and the European Union over the coup.
