Asia-Pacific trades mixed amid pandemic surge

Major stock markets in the Asia-Pacific region traded mixed on Friday, as the ongoing surge in cases of the Delta variant of the coronavirus dampened hopes for a strong economic recovery. Seoul coronavirus restrictions are expected to be extended by two weeks, as New Zealand suspended its travel bubble with Australia after a surge in cases in the country. Japan’s Nikkei 225 is closed today due to a market holiday.

The Kospi Composite traded 0.11% higher at 7:20 am CET, while Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 stood flat at the same time. A minute later, the dollar gained 0.09% against the yen trading for ¥110.2545.

Over in Hong Kong, the Hang Seng plummeted 1.21% at 7:22 am CET, while concurrently in mainland China, the Shenzen Composite and the Shanghai Composite dropped 1.43% and 0.75% respectively.
