Asian shares fall after slump on Wall Street
Shares on the major Asian stock market indexes traded with losses on Friday, as the negative sentiment from the United States seemingly spilled over.
COVID-19 was still in the limelight, with both South Korea and India reporting increasing numbers of daily infections. On the data front, Japan’s consumer prices rose 0.8% on a yearly basis in December, while the country’s core inflation reading remained virtually unchanged both on a yearly scale and on a monthly comparison basis.
On the Chinese mainland, the Shanghai Composite decreased by 0.76% at 7:00 am CET, with the Shenzhen Composite losing 1.06% a minute later. The Australian S&P/ASX 200 tumbled 2.27% at the close, and Japan’s Nikkei 225 dropped 0.9% as the session ended.
South Korea’s Kospi was down by 1.09% at 7:17 am CET, while Hong Kong’s Hang Seng slid 0.64% at the same time. Meanwhile, the dollar stood 0.33% lower against the yen, going for 113.8140 at 7:18 am CET.
