Australia prepared to pay price in China dispute – minister
Australian Trade Minister Dan Tehan stated on Friday that the country was prepared to endure China’s economic measures against it if it means defending its sovereignty.
Tehan asserted that Australia’s “values are so important” that they have to be protected above “all else,” adding that the country is willing to pay an economic price for standing for those values. Additionally, he noted that the government is looking at developing tools to deal with China in the ongoing trade dispute, as he said that there is collective action that can be taken against “economic coercion.”
The trade dispute between Australia and China has been taken up by the World Trading Organization, with China filing a complaint about Australia’s trade rules, as Australia hoped the WTO could help in easing the tensions between the two countries.
