Austria: New START will benefit global security
Austrian Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg (pictured) stated on Monday the agreement between the United States and Russia on the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START) would benefit global security.
“The world is in a dangerous spiral of nuclear weapons, and its arsenals are being expanded and upgraded. But we need just the opposite: more control and disarmament,” he said. Schallenberg also reaffirmed Vienna was ready to host the negotiations if necessary.
Earlier in the day, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov said the two countries decided to extend the treaty on “Moscow’s terms.”
