Barbados gets its very first president
The island of Barbados has taken steps towards becoming a republic in electing Dame Sandra Mason as its first president.
Mason, who has been governor-general since 2018 before being appointed queen, was picked after securing two-thirds of the votes in the nation’s two houses of Parliament.
In September last year, the island announced it intends to become a republic, removing Queen Elizabeth II as its head of state.
