Barnier: Brexit talks won’t continue after Wednesday – report
European Commission’s Head of the United Kingdom Task Force Michel Barnier told Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) the bloc’s negotiations with Britain over their post-Brexit trade relations would continue until Wednesday, but no further, RTE’s Tony Connelly reported on Monday.
Barnier allegedly claimed London was waiting to see if Brussels would eventually agree to “any free trade agreement” before deciding if it would pass or withdraw the proposed Internal Market and the Finance Bills. He added Britain was “mistaken” to think the bloc would change its position on those matters “as a result of threats.”
Lastly, Barnier noted the European Commission would be ready “to react immediately” in case of no-deal Brexit and expressed his optimism the two parties would find “concrete, technical solutions” to the issue of Northern Ireland.
