Berlin: US trying to stop Nord Stream 2 unilaterally
Germany’s Minister of State at the Federal Foreign Office Niels Annen claimed on Wednesday that “it is obvious that the United States is trying to unilaterally stop” the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline from being completed by introducing new sanctions against the project.
Speaking at a Bundestag committee meeting, he underlined that “extraterritorial sanctions are a blatant interference with European Union’s sovereignty.” Besides German firms, the measures may impact companies from France, the Netherlands and Austria, Annen asserted.
The potential move by Washington, which Annen expects will be announced soon, may also affect the bloc’s foreign policy as “inconsistent sanctions damage the joint policy towards Russia,” he pointed out.
