Biden: US, UK to help Australia build ‘conventionally armed’ nuclear submarines
United States President Joe Biden announced that his country together with Australia and the United Kingdom is taking a “historic step” towards ensuring peace and stability in the Indo-pacific. He revealed that Washington is launching consultations with Canberra for the acquisition of new submarines “to better meet the threats of today and tomorrow.”
Joined virtually by British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Australia’s Scott Morrison, Biden told the press that these are not nuclear-armed submarines, but “conventionally armed” submarines powered by nuclear reactors.
“The future of each of our nations and the world depends on a free and open Indo-Pacific,” Biden asserted, underscoring the importance of having “the most modern capability to maneuver and defend against rapidly evolving threats.”
