Biden’s spending bill to fail as Manchin withdraws support
United States Senator Joe Manchin said on Sunday he will not vote in favor of President Joe Biden’s spending bill after months of negotiations. The centrist Democratic lawmaker told Fox News that he “cannot vote to continue” with the legislation. “I just can’t. I’ve tried everything humanly possible. I can’t get there,” he said.
The Senate is split 50-50 along party lines, meaning the administration needed the support of all Democratic senators in order to pass the Build Back Better Act, a spending package worth around $1.75 billion. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer intended to get the bill up for a vote before Christmas, but protracted negotiations with Machin derailed the schedule.
