Blinken: Not clear why CSTO forces sent to Kazakhstan
United States Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on Friday that he doesn’t understand why Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) forces were sent to Kazakhstan amid riots.
“It would seem to me that the Kazakh authorities…certainly have the capacity to deal appropriately with protests,” Blinken stated and stated Washington is “very concerned” about the developments in the former Soviet republic.
The US top diplomat also urged Kazakh authorities to respect the rights of the protesters. The call comes after Kazakhstan’s President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev authorized security forces to shoot at protesters without warning.
