Brexit trading laws contributed to NI riots – Lewis
Northern Ireland secretary Brandon Lewis (pictured) said in a statement to the House of Commons on Tuesday that Brexit and specifically UK post-Brexit trading laws have played a part in recent violent protests in the region.
“I recognise there are concerns about the implications around the Northern Ireland protocol, concerns which overlap with wider questions about national identity and political allegiance and that comes at a time of economic uncertainty caused by the pandemic,” Lewis said.
Nevertheless, Lewis described the violent riots as “unacceptable”, noting that although reasons for it were “complex and multi-faceted”, one of the contributing factors was the perception that coronavirus lockdown wasn’t equally enforced across communities.
