Canada threatens US with retaliatory tariffs
Deputy Prime Minister of Canada Chrystia Freeland said in a statement Ottawa plans to impose retaliatory tariffs against the United States after Washington’s decision to reimpose a 10% levy on some of the country’s aluminum products.
The punitive measures were brought back despite being lifted in 2019 and according to the US Trade Representative’s office, they apply to the not-alloyed ingots of unwrought aluminum.
“In response to the American tariffs, Canada intends to swiftly impose dollar-for-dollar countermeasures,” Freeland stated, referring to the US action as “unwarranted and unacceptable.”
