China, Russia on US watchlist for intellectual property threats
The United States Trade Representative Office released a special report on Friday on the state of intellectual property (IP) protection and enforcement, saying China’s actions on IP fall short of its commitments aimed at improving IP rights. The US will be “closely monitoring” China’s compliance with the Phase One trade deal.
The study suggested that the IP protection issues have aggravated since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic due to a boom in online shopping. “Widespread counterfeiting in China’s e-commerce markets, the largest in the world, has also been exacerbated by the migration of infringing sales from physical to online markets,” the report read.
The priority watchlist of countries that pose the biggest threat includes Argentina, Chile, India, Indonesia, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Ukraine and Venezuela. Meanwhile, The United Arab Emirates was removed from that watchlist.
