China threatens retaliation if UK offers HK citizenship
China could retaliate against the United Kingdom if London offers Hong Kongers a path to British citizenship over Beijing’s national security law, Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian told reporters on Friday. Beijing “reserves the right to take corresponding countermeasures,” according to Zhao.
The British government said earlier it is considering granting certain expanded rights to residents of Hong Kong that hold British National Overseas (BNO) passports in response to what it perceives as China’s violation of Hong Kong’s autonomy.
“If imposed, Dominic Raab & I will explore options for a path to citizenship for BNO passport holders. The UK will continue to defend the rights & freedoms of the people of Hong Kong,” Britain’s Home Office Secretary Priti Patel said of the controversial bill.
