China, US to talk trade deal progress soon – report
Trade officials from China and the United States will soon discuss the progress of the phase one trade deal as tensions between the two countries keep rising, the South China Morning Post reported on Saturday, citing an unnamed source familiar with the matter.
According to the agreement, new discussions are to be carried out every six months and China’s Vice-Premier Liu He and US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer will probably hold talks in August, the insider told the media outlet. However, the source warned that an official meeting may still be skipped as the sides are currently less willing to talk.
An anonymous Chinese government advisor said that the trade deal holds less importance currently, given all the recent hostilities. US President Donald Trump gave a similar statement earlier this week.
