China welcomes plans to extend New START
China welcomed the readiness of the United States and Russia to prolong their New START agreement on nuclear disarmament, Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said on Wednesday.
Zhao pointed out the decision is important for global security and the promotion of peace worldwide. He added that because Russia and the US are the largest nuclear powers, they need to “substantially and substantively reduce their nuclear arsenals, and create conditions for thorough nuclear disarmament.”
Earlier, the new administration of US President Joe Biden informed Russia it wants to extend the New START deal by 5 years. The move was subsequently welcomed by Moscow.
