Chipmaker GlobalFoundries to double output by 2022

United States chipmaker GlobalFoundries will invest “over $6 billion” to expand its production capacities, on track to at least double its automotive semiconductor output, in response to the recent global chip shortage, the company announced in a statement on Wednesday.

As a part of this plan, GlobalFoundries will expand sites in Singapore, the US and Germany. However, the company warned that the expansion will not yield results until 2023, expecting the car industry to continue facing chip shortages well into 2022.

“We will ship more than double the [chip] wafers into automotive than we did in 2020, and we expect to expand that capacity in 2022 and beyond,” said Mike Hogan, a senior vice president in charge of the automotive business at GlobalFoundries.
