Cuomo admin pushed for undercount of nursing home deaths – report
Members of New York Governor Andrew Cuomo’s administration had pressured health authorities to omit real data on nursing home deaths caused by the coronavirus in the state, making them match their figures with those the administration had published, The Wall Street Journal reported, citing unnamed sources familiar with the matter.
A report issued by the state health officials in July 2020 only showed COVID-19 fatalities in long-term-care facilities, without including patients who had died in hospitals after contracting the disease in nursing homes. According to the media outlet, state authorities now report that 15,000 people have died in nursing homes and other long-term-care facilities due to coronavirus since March 2020, a number 50% lower than the state administration previously acknowledged.
Cuomo and his administration are the subjects of a federal and state authorities’ investigation into their handling of death toll data in nursing homes.
