Daimler to pay $1.5B to settle emissions allegations in US
Daimler AG and its subsidiary Mercedes-Benz agreed on Monday to pay $1.5 billion in penalties and other costs to settle emissions cheat allegations in the United States.
US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Andrew Wheeler said the carmaker reached the deal after EPA found over 250,000 vehicles sold in the country between 2009 and 2016 were equipped with software designed to cheat on emissions tests.
“By resolving these proceedings, Daimler avoids lengthy court actions with respective legal and financial risks,” Daimler stated and added it also agreed to pay $700 million to settle a class-action lawsuit by affected customers.
