Dow closes 180 points higher on stimulus deal hopes
Stock markets on Wall Street closed in the green on Thursday as traders are hoping for a new coronavirus stimulus package. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said that lawmakers are still not sure how much stimulus is appropriate. Investors are also being focused on big earnings to be announced after the closing bell. Meanwhile, on the data front, the number of initial jobless claims for the week ending August 1 fell by 249,000.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average index jumped 0.68%, or 185 points at the close as Apple grew by 3.49%, while the S&P 500 climbed 0.64%. MGM Resorts International was the best performer increasing by 10.41%. The Nasdaq 100 added 1.27% with Facebook rising 6.49%.
The euro was 0.08% higher compared to the dollar to change hands at 1.18722 at 3:57 pm ET.
