Dow jumps 200 pts in record-setting session
Shares on the major stock market indexes in the United States extended gains on Friday with the Dow Jones Industrial Average soaring more than 200 points in a session during which both the Dow Jones and the S&P 500 set new record highs.
Both US President Joe Biden and Treasury secretary Janet Yellen shrugged off a somewhat underwhelming jobs report, stressing that the numbers underpin the need for prolonged stimulus in the country’s economic recovery process.
The Dow Jones jumped 204 points or 0.59% at 2:19 pm ET, while the S&P 500 added 0.69% at the same time. Both benchmarks set new records shortly after the trading commenced. The Nasdaq 100 advanced by 0.69% a minute later, propelled mostly by tech giants Apple and Microsoft. At 2:21, the dollar was still struggling to regain footing, as the euro went 0.76% up versus the US currency, to sell for 1.21561 at 2:22 pm ET.
