EasyJet to ground fleet due to COVID-19
EasyJet PLC announced on Friday it’s decided to ground the majority of its fleet from March 24, amid overall travel restrictions and lockdowns that many counties imposed in order to combat the spread of the coronavirus.
British low-cost airline added that it is also contemplating operating “a minimal schedule of essential services” on some routes to a maximum of 10% of its “usual” capacity during this time of crisis.
“These are unprecedented times for the airline industry,” easyJet CEO Johan Lundgren said, adding: “Significantly reducing our flying program is the right thing to do when many countries have issued advice to their citizens not to travel unless it is essential and the aircraft groundings will also remove significant levels of variable costs at a time when this remains crucial.”
