ECB’s Lagarde: Short-term outlook still uncertain
President of the European Central Bank, Christine Lagarde, said on Thursday that the overall economic situation is expected to improve over the year despite short-term uncertainties related to vaccination programs across the Eurozone.
Lagarde noted that rebound in global demand teamed up with fiscal measures would support the bloc’s economic activity, stressing that persistency of the coronavirus pandemic and related restriction measures will continue to loom over the economy.
Commenting on the inflation outlook, Lagarde confirmed the ECB stands ready to readjust its policies as ongoing vaccinations and the gradual easing of restrictions spur inflation towards its 2% target range.
The ECB left its key interest rates unchanged in its latest monetary policy decision announced earlier today.
